4 Reasons To Lock Out Stinkbugs This Season

stinkbug As we begin to settle in for the cold months ahead. Unfortunately, so do the stinkbugs. During September and October in particular, stinkbugs are looking for a warm environment to spend the winter season, so they take shelter in and around homes.

At Moyer, we know how much it stinks when bugs invade your house and garden, so we're sharing a few things you might not know about stinkbugs and how to keep these pesky pests out of your life:

  1. Stinkbugs actually do stink.
When they are crushed, stinkbugs emit a stench likened to rotten garbage or burnt rubber. The bugs are also drawn to the scent of one another, so where there is one stinkbug, you can be sure others are on their way. And while a house full of stinkbugs may be more of a nuisance than anything (as stinkbugs will not lay eggs and perpetuate indoors), the potential damage occurs when stinkbugs die. Dead stinkbugs are a draw for other insects which may feed on them.

  2. Stinkbugs get to your produce before you do.
Because stinkbugs love apples, peaches, blackberries, corn and soybeans, among other locally grown fruits and vegetables, some Pennsylvania farmers have suffered huge losses due to stinkbug damage. If you go to pick your own apples, for example, you can recognize stinkbug markings known as "cat facing," which makes the apple unmarketable.

  3. Once stinkbugs get in, they're not easy to get out.
Insecticides applied on the exterior of your home using a professionally licensed applicator can reduce the numbers that get into your home. The material used should be a microencapsulated product that releases over time for a longer lasting effect. The key entry points are the upper areas of the home such as soffits, ridge vents and fascia boards. Professional grade or homemade insect light traps placed in attics are also a good temporary solution, as they attract, trap and contain these pests.

  4. Prevention is key.
The best way to deal with a potential stinkbug problem is to keep them out in the first place by sealing cracks around doors, windows, vents and lights in ceilings. This should be done in advance of the late summer/early fall when stinkbugs are most prevalent.

Prevention is key, so call Moyer Indoor Outdoor as a preventative measure before stink bugs settle in this fall. If you've had them before, they will be back! We are currently offering $25 off stinkbug treatments scheduled before October 15th.
