Walking for a Cause: The Moyer 5K Goes Pink

The Moyer 5K Goes Pink Every year, the Moyer Fitness Walk is held alongside the 5K Race, but can sometimes be overshadowed by the very popular 5K event. However, a remarkable story came to light during this year's fitness walk.

Craig Gerhart is a Property Manager at Spring Hill Realty. In July 2009, his wife, Sumi, was diagnosed with breast cancer. Craig Gerhart, Cheryl Orloski, Debbie Hoffman and Karen Esquirell will be participating in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure™ in a stand against breast cancer, spearheaded by Cheryl Orloski and Spring Hill Realty. In preparation for this three-day, 60-mile walking event, this inspired team who calls themselves "Girls & Guys Gone Pink", walked from the Spring Hill Realty office in Harleysville, to the Moyer 5k and Fitness Walk in Souderton, and participated in the 2 mile fitness walk on July 7th.

"We saw the Moyer Fitness walk as a great way to prepare for the upcoming Susan G. Koman walk," said Gerhart. The Girls & Guys Gone Pink team has been walking about 20 miles per week to physically prepare themselves for the 3-day walk.

But this event is much more than a fitness walk. The Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure is a 60-mile walk to raise funds and awareness to fight breast cancer. Participants commit to fundraising and training, and dedicate a three-day weekend to the event. It takes place in 15 different cities in the United States, and will be held in Philadelphia on October 15th through the 17th.

"We feel the responsibility to do whatever we can to fight this disease," said Cheryl Orloski of Spring Hill Realty, who is credited for initiating Girls & Guys Gone Pink. "Breast cancer cannot be prevented and not only affects the woman infected, but friends and family as well."

"One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime," stated Craig. "The 3-Day for the Cure encourages you to get in shape but also helps you realize just how many women have breast cancer, and how many people it affects."
