Lawn renovations may be the only option left to generate a lush, green, and healthy turf. Renovating your lawn can be necessary when approximately 20-25% of your lawn is dead, bare, or covered with weeds. Sometimes, lawn renovation is recommended when different types of grass have grown into your turf, creating a patchy texture and color. If problems are too severe, starting a new lawn may be the best option. This often requires the removal of the existing turf, tilling, adding topsoil, and changing the soil grade. Conditions like excessively compacted soil, greater than 50% weeds or bare soil, or a thatch (a tightly bound layer of dead grass, including leaves, stems, and roots, that build up on the soil surface at the base of the living grass of a lawn) that wasn’t corrected by renovation efforts, can also require renovation. Here at Moyer & Son, we chose to renovate part of our property due to several conditions. We slit-seeded with a type of grass that will not go dormant in the summer and will give us a beautiful lawn. With irrigation and properly timed fertilizer application, the grass is growing as expected and will look even better next summer.
