On May 8th, a sunny Tuesday morning, area Elementary students were treated to the Ninth Annual Community Reading Day. Organized by the North Penn Chamber of Commerce, 33 different area schools were visited by over a hundred readers from the local business district. Among these, Moyer & Son Inc., had seven of their own employees volunteer to participate in the program. Public, Parochial, Christian, Charter, and Private schools from the area, all participated in this event. Some 2,300 students gathered on their “story time rugs”, sitting beside friends, and listened as animated stories from fable to fairytale were unfolded by participating readers. The children, teachers, and those volunteering, love this program. It allows for not only mental entertainment and stimulation by a new voice, but also the opportunity for children to question and learn about their guest’s occupations. Such careers vary from marketing and sales, to public relations and customer service. June Baker, a sales associate for Moyer & Son for the past five years, read to Mr. Trumbowers’ second grade class at Franconia Elementary School. Her story, an ethnic folktale, entertained the young listeners as she read using a Spanish accent in which the story was written in. “The entire experience was absolutely fabulous”, Baker quoted after the event. “I look forward to reading to another class again next year.” Students were given bookmarkers and Phillies Reading Tickets donated by The North Penn Chamber of Commerce as well as, the storybooks read by Moyer & Son employees, which were donated to the schools’ libraries. Among the stories donated, were June Bakers’ story, “Conejito”, a Panama folktale written by Margaret Read MacDonald.
