Radon Protection

Do I need to test for radon if my house is less than 10 years old?

All houses have some amount of radon, a byproduct of a decomposed radioactive earth mineral (uranium) that eventually rises to the earth’s surface. You can’t see, feel or smell radon gas, which enters the body as you breathe and can cause lung cancer.

So whether you are at risk for radon exposure has nothing to do with your home’s age and more to do with where it is situated. Your neighbor’s house can have a different reading than yours because of the level of concentration in the earth beneath it and natural fluctuations.

To keep your family safe, test the radon levels in your home every two to four years. If you have a radon mitigation system already in place, the PA Department of Environmental Protection recommends you have it evaluated every two years to be sure the system is working efficiently.
