Water Quality

How do I know if I need a water filter, and
what is the best one for me?

Your household’s water comes from either your public municipal water supply or a private well. Public water is treated and distributed according to federal standards to assure it is potable—that is, safe to drink—while well water is your responsibility and you should test it annually for potability. Regular testing will also confirm such undesirable features as “hardness,” pH, iron, dirt and dissolved solvents (which cause cloudy water), whether the source is public or private. Filtration can correct these.

A carbon filter removes unpleasant tastes and odors as well as chlorine, which can also be harsh on the skin. “Hard water” contains an abundance of minerals that create damaging deposits in plumbing and prevent soaps from lathering and rinsing. A water softener alleviates these issues. A reverse osmosis filtration system will often solve a variety of issues, pulling bacteria, pollutants and contaminates out of the water to make it safe for drinking and improving the flavor, smell and clarity
